The Professor Challenge – Day 10: Some Days, Nothing Goes Your Way

Bankroll Progress

  • Ending Bankroll: 1409.68

  • Session Result: Losing session

  • Challenge Status: Confidence intact despite a rough day of variance.

The Professor Challenge – Day 10: Some Days, Nothing Goes Your Way
Final Bankroll - Day 10

📖 Table of Contents

🎢 From Day 9 Luck to Day 10 Pain

Well…

If I was lucky on Day 9, today I was absolutely unlucky. XD

But that’s poker.

It happens, and it’s part of the process.

Yesterday I managed to survive a huge pot with AA against a flopped set thanks to a beautiful runner-runner runout.

Today it felt like the deck wanted its money back immediately.

There isn’t really one catastrophic hand that defines the session.

Instead, it was one of those days where the same frustrating pattern seemed to repeat itself over and over again.

🃏 When Every River Seems to Complete Something

The postflop situations were particularly frustrating.

I’d make a continuation bet on the flop.

Get called.

Continue applying pressure on the turn.

Get called again.

Then the river would arrive…

Flush completed.

Or:

Straight completed.

Again.

And again.

Obviously, I’m exaggerating when I say it happened every single time.

But anyone who has played enough poker knows exactly what this kind of session feels like.

You build a pot while you’re ahead or while representing a strong range, only for the river to dramatically change the board.

And suddenly the correct decision is often the least satisfying one:

Fold.

That’s what I did.

There’s no reason to start paying people off simply because the session isn’t going your way.

💥 And Preflop Wasn’t Much Better

Unfortunately, postflop wasn’t the only problem.

The preflop battles didn’t exactly cooperate either.

And on Red Dragon Poker, losing those pots can become expensive very quickly.

We’ve already seen throughout this challenge just how extreme the preflop action can become.

Huge raises.

Extremely deep stacks.

Multiple callers.

Massive all-ins.

When those situations go against you at the same time that you’re getting difficult river runouts, the result is inevitably going to hurt.

Today was simply one of those sessions.

🧠 The Most Important Difference: Confidence

But there’s something very different about Day 10 compared with the first few days of this challenge.

I’m not worried.

That’s probably the biggest takeaway from today’s session.

During the beginning of the challenge, a session like this might have made me question whether I was approaching Red Dragon Poker correctly.

Was I playing too tight?

Was I playing too aggressively?

Was I misunderstanding the field?

After ten sessions, those doubts are disappearing.

I feel increasingly comfortable with the games.

So when a session goes badly now, I don’t immediately feel the need to completely change my strategy.

Sometimes you simply lose.

That’s poker.

The important thing is being able to distinguish between losing because you’re playing badly and losing because the cards didn’t cooperate.

Today felt very much like the latter.

And that’s why I’m already looking forward to the next session.

📺 Watch the Full Session

Day 10 is actually a useful session to watch precisely because it wasn’t a winning one.

You can see how the difficult river situations developed, the preflop losses and, most importantly, how I approached the session without allowing the results to completely change my decision-making.

🎓 Technical Comment by Marchese del River

Technical Comment by Marchese del River

Day 10 is probably more interesting from a psychological perspective than Day 9.

Yesterday, The Professor won a massive pot after getting fortunate with AA against a flopped set.

Today, variance went in the opposite direction.

That’s exactly why individual poker sessions tell us very little.

There’s also an important technical detail hidden inside today’s frustration.

When draws complete on the river after we’ve bet multiple streets, it’s extremely easy to fall into the trap of thinking:

“I’ve already put so much money into this pot that I have to call.”

No.

Money already invested in the pot doesn’t make a bad river call better.

If the board changes dramatically and the opponent’s range becomes heavily weighted toward value, folding can still be the highest-EV decision.

And repeatedly making those folds during a losing session requires discipline.

The same principle applies to the challenge as a whole.

Day 9 shouldn’t make us believe we’ve solved Red Dragon Poker.

Day 10 shouldn’t make us believe the strategy has stopped working.

We need volume.

That’s precisely what The Professor identified after the previous session.

The objective now should remain unchanged: accumulate hands, maintain discipline, evaluate the results over a meaningful sample and move up when the bankroll and evidence justify it.

💭 Final Thoughts

Not every chapter of a bankroll challenge can end with a new high.

Day 9 went my way.

Day 10 definitely didn’t. XD

And that’s completely fine.

What I’m happiest about isn’t the result—obviously—but my reaction to it.

I didn’t feel lost.

I didn’t feel like I suddenly stopped understanding the games.

And I didn’t feel the need to completely change what I’ve been doing because of one bad session.

I’m becoming increasingly confident in this field.

Now I simply need to keep playing.

I’ll make up for it next session.
