The Professor Challenge Day 11 - Poker Gives, Poker Takes

Bankroll Progress

  • Starting Bankroll: 1409.68 DC

  • Ending Bankroll: See the final bankroll screenshot below

  • Session Result: Losing session

  • Challenge Status: Two difficult sessions in a row, but the plan remains unchanged.

Final bankroll after Day 11 of The Professor Challenge
Final Bankroll - Day 11

📖 Table of Contents

🎢 Two Rough Sessions in a Row

A short session today — roughly an hour and a half — and unfortunately it didn’t go much better than Day 10.

That’s two difficult sessions in a row after the big upswing on Day 9. But this is exactly the kind of stretch a bankroll challenge has to include if it is going to show what grinding actually looks like.

I don’t feel lost, and I don’t feel the need to reinvent the strategy. The bigger problem right now is volume.

One or two huge pots can dominate a short session on Red Dragon Poker. If I want the results to start meaning something, I need to put in more hours and let the sample grow.

🃏 AQ vs AT: A 400BB Punch

The biggest hand of the session was painful.

I got involved in a pot worth around 400 big blinds with AQ against AT.

We both flopped two pair. In a game this deep, that is exactly the kind of setup where a single hand can reshape the entire session.

This time, the 400BB pot went the wrong way. There isn’t much more to say about it: sometimes you are going to be on the wrong side of a huge collision.

The important part is what happens after the big pot. Chasing the loss would only turn normal variance into bad poker.

💥 99 Into AA in a 4-Handed Game

Late in the session, another big preflop spot arrived.

We were playing four-handed. The big blind 3-bet to roughly 40BB and I pushed 99 for around 150BB.

He had AA.

Again, the result hurts, but the important question in these spots is not whether the hand won. It is whether the decision makes sense against the actual ranges and dynamics of this field.

Red Dragon continues to produce unusually large preflop pots, especially as tables get shorter. That is exactly why judging the challenge one session at a time would be a mistake.

🧠 Poker Gives, Poker Takes

Day 9 gave me a runner-runner escape with AA in a huge pot. Days 10 and 11 gave some of it back.

That’s poker. Poker gives and poker takes.

The lesson for me is becoming increasingly obvious: I need to stop looking at these short sessions as isolated results and increase the number of hours I’m playing.

I now feel comfortable with the Red Dragon field. I understand the unusual preflop sizing, the deep-stack dynamics and the type of opponents I am facing much better than I did at the beginning of the challenge.

The next step is not another theoretical adjustment. It is simply to play more.

If you missed the previous entries, you can read Day 10, Day 9, and our 2026 Red Dragon Poker rebuild overview for more context on these games.

📺 Watch the Full Session

You can watch the complete Day 11 session below, including the 400BB AQ vs AT pot and the late 99 vs AA preflop clash.

🎓 Technical Comment by Marchese del River

Technical Comment by Marchese del River

Day 11 is a useful reminder of why deep-stacked poker cannot be evaluated session by session.

A 400BB pot and a 150BB preflop all-in are enough to overwhelm almost everything else that happens during a ninety-minute session. The final number therefore tells us very little about the underlying quality of the decisions.

The key after a stretch like this is to avoid two opposite mistakes: becoming scared because the bankroll moved down, or becoming reckless because you want to recover immediately.

The Professor is right about the next step: volume.

Once the field is familiar and the strategic adjustments are established, only a larger sample can tell us whether the edge is real and how large it actually is.

Keep the decisions independent from yesterday’s result. Keep collecting hands. Then let the numbers speak.

💭 Final Thoughts

Two losing sessions in a row. A 400BB pot gone. Another 150BB preflop collision lost.

Not exactly the update I wanted to write.

But nothing about these two sessions changes how I currently see the Red Dragon games. I feel comfortable in the field and increasingly confident in the adjustments I’ve made since the first days of the challenge.

Now I need to do the obvious thing: increase the volume.

Poker gives. Poker takes. The only way forward is to keep playing.
