The Professor Challenge – Day 5: Another Session, Another Preflop Disaster

The move to Red Dragon Poker was supposed to give this challenge a fresh start.
After the tight and relatively disciplined NL4 Flash pool on NutsPoker, I wanted normal tables, deeper stacks and opponents willing to make bigger mistakes.
That part has happened.
The Red Dragon games are clearly looser. Players call more often, stacks regularly become very deep and preflop pots can escalate extremely quickly.
Unfortunately, the second part of the plan has not worked quite as well.
I keep getting the money in before the flop.
And I keep losing.

🐉 Another Day on Red Dragon Poker
Day 4 was my introduction to the smallest available Red Dragon Poker games:
0.2/0.4/0.8 CNY with a 0.2 CNY ante.
I finished that first session down approximately one buy-in, but the result did not worry me too much. The player pool looked considerably softer than the Flash games I had left behind.
Day 5 confirmed that impression.
There is more limping, more cold calling and much less concern about conventional stack depths. It is completely normal to see players sitting with several hundred big blinds, while some stacks approach or exceed 1,000 BB.
This is exactly the type of environment I was looking for.
The problem is that softer games do not guarantee immediate results.
They simply create opportunities.
You still need to survive the cards.
And during this session, the cards once again had other plans.
💰 Day 5 Bankroll Update
At the end of the session, my Red Dragon wallet showed:
Current balance: 1,144.22 D-Coins
Game: NLH 8-max
Stakes: 0.2/0.4/0.8 CNY
Ante: 0.2 CNY
Session result: Negative
Rakeback: Paid weekly on Monday
The exact session loss is less important than where most of it came from.
Once again, the decisive pots were not complicated river decisions or marginal bluff catches.
They were enormous preflop confrontations in which I entered the pot with a premium hand.
🂡 Aces Cracked in a 350 BB Pot
The largest and most painful hand of the session was about as simple as poker can become.
I had pocket aces.
My opponent had pocket kings.
The money went in before the flop.
The final pot reached approximately 352.7 big blinds.
The board ran:
Q♠ 4♦ 3♥ 6♣ K♣
For four cards, everything was going exactly as expected.
Then the king arrived on the river.
My opponent’s pocket kings improved to a set, and another massive all-in preflop disappeared from my stack.
There is no complicated strategic explanation here. With pocket aces against pocket kings, getting the money in preflop is the result you want.
That does not make watching the river any easier.
💔 Ace-King Loses to Jacks
Another significant confrontation came with A♥ K♥ against J♣ J♦.
Once again, the decisive action took place before the flop.
The board ran:
10♠ 2♥ 10♥ 6♦ 2♠
The flop gave me two overcards and the nut-flush draw, so there were still plenty of ways to win the pot.
None of them arrived.
The turn and river completed the board without an ace, a king or a heart, leaving pocket jacks ahead.
This one was different from the aces-versus-kings hand. Ace-king against jacks is a classic race rather than a dominating premium-versus-premium situation.
But emotionally, the distinction starts to feel less important after losing several large preflop all-ins across consecutive sessions.
🎲 The Real Frustration
The frustrating part is not simply losing a session.
Losing sessions are part of poker, especially when playing ante games with deep stacks and unusually large pots.
The frustration comes from the repetition.
During Day 3, I lost several important coin flips on NutsPoker. I then moved to Red Dragon, found the looser environment I wanted and immediately continued losing the biggest preflop confrontations.
It begins to create a strange feeling.
The tables look good.
The opponents appear willing to make mistakes.
The situations I wanted are finally appearing.
But every time a huge pot develops, the result seems to move in the opposite direction.
Of course, I know what variance is.
I know pocket aces will occasionally lose to pocket kings.
I know ace-king will not always beat pocket jacks.
I also know that two or three screenshots do not prove anything about the long term.
But this is a personal bankroll challenge, not a theoretical exercise. When the bankroll is limited, every 300 BB pot feels enormous.
You do not experience variance as an abstract mathematical concept.
You experience it as money disappearing from the wallet.
🧠 Technical Comment by Il Marchese del River
I can understand why The Professor feels frustrated after another losing session. When you lose several big preflop all-ins in consecutive streams, it is easy to believe something is going wrong.
In reality, I think this session confirms exactly why moving to Red Dragon Poker was the right decision.
The opponents are giving action.
They are willing to build massive pots with dominated ranges, they defend too wide, they overvalue one-pair hands and they are perfectly happy to gamble for hundreds of big blinds. That is exactly the environment a winning player wants.
The problem is that variance doesn’t care whether you’ve made a good decision.
Pocket Aces losing to Pocket Kings is painful, but it changes absolutely nothing about the quality of the play. If anything, you should be delighted every time you manage to get Kings all-in against Aces… unfortunately, this time you were on the wrong side of it.
The Ace-King versus Pocket Jacks hand is different. That is a classic race. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. It should never become a hand that affects your future decisions.
What I do want The Professor to improve is something else.
I still feel he is giving too much emotional weight to individual sessions.
This challenge isn’t about surviving five days.
It is about surviving five hundred thousand hands.
The biggest edge on Red Dragon will not come from winning every preflop confrontation. It will come from the incredible amount of postflop mistakes these players make every single orbit.
There are players sitting with 200, 300, 500, 800 or even 1,200 big blinds who simply refuse to fold.
Those are the players that will build this bankroll.
Not one flip.
Not one cooler.
Not one river.
My advice remains exactly the same as after Day 4:
Keep buying in with around 100 BB.
Don’t chase the deep stacks simply because everyone else has them.
Continue taking profitable all-ins with premium hands.
Stay patient and let variance do its work.
The field is soft.
Now it’s simply a matter of lasting long enough to take advantage of it.

🏁 Final Thoughts
Five sessions into this challenge, things have certainly not gone the way I imagined.
I left the fast-fold pools because I wanted softer games, more mistakes and bigger opportunities. I found exactly that.
What I didn’t find was an immediate turnaround in results.
Instead, I’ve spent another session watching premium hands come second best in the biggest pots.
It’s frustrating.
There’s no point pretending otherwise.
But after listening to Il Marchese, I also know that changing my strategy because of a few painful all-ins would be the biggest mistake I could make.
The games are good.
The opponents are making mistakes.
Eventually, those mistakes have to pay.
The bankroll has taken another hit, but the challenge continues.
