The Professor Challenge Day 12 - The Field Came to Gamble

Bankroll Progress

  • Starting Bankroll: See the previous Day 11 final bankroll screenshot

  • Ending Bankroll: See the Day 12 final bankroll screenshot below

  • Session Result: Routine session; exact result shown in the screenshot

  • Challenge Status: The field looked more gamble-heavy than usual, but the overall approach remains unchanged.

📖 Table of Contents

🎰 A More Gamble-Friendly Field

Today was one of those sessions where nothing particularly dramatic happened, but the table itself still told me something.

The games felt more gamble-friendly than usual. I saw several preflop all-ins with ranges that looked much wider than what you would expect in a more traditional online cash game: any pair, Ax hands and even connected hands such as J9.

At this point, that kind of action does not surprise me anymore. Red Dragon Poker has already shown throughout this challenge that the preflop environment can become extremely loose, especially when players are willing to put very deep stacks in with hands that would normally prefer a much smaller pot.

The important part is not to get dragged into the same gambling mentality just because the table is doing it. A loose field is useful only if I keep making decisions based on what people are actually showing up with.

🃏 QQ Into AA: The One Big Collision

There was one hand that stood out.

I had QQ on the button and faced a shove from the big blind for roughly 100 big blinds.

Given the kind of action I had been seeing at the table, this was exactly the sort of spot where a premium pair can easily end up playing for stacks. This time, however, the big blind had AA.

Nothing exotic. No spectacular river. No complicated postflop decision. Just queens running directly into aces.

In a session full of players willing to gamble preflop, that is also a useful reminder: wide action does not mean every opponent is weak every time.

🧠 Routine Does Not Mean Irrelevant

The rest of the session was fairly standard, and that is probably the main point of Day 12.

Not every update in a bankroll challenge needs a 400BB pot, a runner-runner escape or a brutal river. Most poker sessions are made up of ordinary decisions repeated over and over again.

What matters is whether I am continuing to understand the field better. Today reinforced the impression that Red Dragon can become extremely aggressive preflop and that players are often prepared to stack off much wider than in the environments I was used to before this challenge.

That does not mean I should start calling everything. It means I should keep collecting information, identify who is actually gambling too wide and let those tendencies influence my ranges.

If you missed the previous updates, you can read Day 11, Day 10, and our Red Dragon Poker 2026 overview for more context on the games and the adjustments behind this challenge.

🎓 Technical Comment by Marchese del River

Technical Comment by Marchese del River

A routine session can be strategically useful precisely because it gives us a cleaner look at the population.

When several players are willing to move all-in preflop with small pairs, Ax hands and connected hands, the natural response is not to become equally loose. The response is to widen value ranges selectively and understand exactly which opponents are responsible for the action.

The QQ versus AA hand is a good example. Against a player whose 100BB shoving range is genuinely very wide, queens can be an extremely strong hand. Running into aces does not suddenly make the decision wrong.

At the same time, one loose showdown should never become an excuse to assume that every player shares the same range. The Professor’s next edge will come from separating general field tendencies from player-specific tendencies.

That is where volume matters again: more hands mean better reads, better classification of opponents and fewer decisions based on impressions from a tiny sample.

💭 Final Thoughts

No fireworks today.

The field looked ready to gamble, I ran QQ into AA in a 100BB preflop showdown, and the rest of the session was mostly business as usual.

But these are exactly the sessions I need more of. The goal now is not to chase memorable hands. It is to build volume, understand the player pool more precisely and let the bankroll challenge develop over a much larger sample.

The challenge continues.
